Smart App Control for Brisbane Security Systems — CCTV, Alarm, Intercom From Your Phone
If your Brisbane CCTV or alarm system isn’t fully controllable from your phone, you’re paying for hardware from a decade ago. Every system we install in 2026 — Dahua CCTV, AJAX alarm, Akuvox intercom — runs through a modern mobile app with end-to-end encryption, push notifications, and remote unlock/arm/disarm in under 5 seconds.
This page covers what app control actually means in practice, which apps you’ll use for which gear, common setup mistakes, and how to make the apps reliable through Brisbane’s unique internet quirks (NBN dropout, dual-modem households, VPN interference).
The three apps every Brisbane homeowner needs
| App | Controls | Free or paid | Key features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dahua DMSS | CCTV cameras + NVR | Free (no subscription) | Live view, playback, P2P encrypted, AI alerts (person/vehicle) |
| AJAX Security System | Alarm panels, sensors, sirens | Free (no subscription) | Arm/disarm, scenario triggers, push alerts, video verification |
| Akuvox SmartPlus | Video intercoms, door release | $3-7/month per unit (first 12 months included) | Answer door from anywhere, remote unlock, video archive |
These three together cover 95% of residential security needs. Other apps (Reolink, Eufy, Swann) are consumer-tier; they work but have privacy/reliability trade-offs.
Dahua DMSS — CCTV from your phone
DMSS replaced the older “iDMSS” and “gDMSS” apps in 2022. It’s the standard for any modern Dahua NVR install in Australia.
What it does well
- P2P encryption — no port forwarding needed. The camera/NVR pairs with your phone via Dahua’s relay servers; live video tunnel is end-to-end encrypted.
- AI alerts — push notification when a person/vehicle is detected (not when a cat or shadow moves). Cuts notification noise by ~90% vs motion-only detection.
- Multi-site — manage home + business + holiday rental from one app. Useful for portfolio investors.
- Time-bound playback — scrub through 30+ days of footage from the app, export clips directly to Photos.
Common DMSS setup mistakes
- Missing UPnP enable on your modem. DMSS auto-pairs via UPnP; if your modem has it disabled, you’ll get “device offline” intermittently.
- Account on wrong region — Australia is region “AP” (Asia-Pacific). If you created an account on the “Global” or “EU” region, push notifications won’t fire.
- iCloud Private Relay or VPN on iPhone blocks the P2P tunnel. Either whitelist DMSS or switch off Private Relay for the app.
AJAX Security System app
The AJAX app is the polished end of the Australian alarm market — built for the AJAX wireless platform (Hub, MotionProtect, DoorProtect, StreetSiren).
What it does well
- Scenarios — “Arm at 11pm if no motion for 20 minutes,” “Disarm only if my phone is within 100m via geofence.” Conditional logic that consumer kits can’t match.
- Video verification — alarm panel triggers paired camera to capture 7s clip on alarm event, attached to push notification.
- Family sharing — up to 50 users with different permission levels (master, admin, user). Tradies get time-limited disarm codes.
- Dual-path comms — Hub2 Plus uses Ethernet + 4G/LTE + Wi-Fi simultaneously. If NBN drops, alarm still reports via 4G in under 3 seconds.
AJAX app limitation
The app is single-system per panel — if you have separate alarm panels at home and a holiday rental, you switch between them. Compare to DMSS which is multi-site native.
Akuvox SmartPlus — intercom from anywhere
SmartPlus is the SaaS layer behind Akuvox apartment intercoms (X912S, X915, R29, E12). When the front door rings, your phone rings — answer the call, see the visitor in 1080p, press unlock.
Features that matter
- Family forwarding — door call rings up to 4 family devices simultaneously. First to answer takes the call.
- Remote unlock — kids forgot keys? Verify via app and open the door from your phone. No code sharing.
- Video archive — 30-day visitor history with snapshots. Useful for “who came to the house when I was out.”
- Temp PINs — generate a 4-digit code for a tradie, valid for a 4-hour window. Auto-expires.
SmartPlus cost
$3.50/month per door station (RRP). Mr Secured includes the first 12 months free on every Akuvox install. After that, owner pays direct to Akuvox AU or via your strata. No lock-in.
Integration scenarios
The 3 apps don’t natively talk to each other. We integrate them via a fourth layer in 30% of our installs:
HomeKit / Google Home / Alexa
Dahua + AJAX both expose HomeKit-compatible bridges; Akuvox supports HomeKit Secure Video on newer models. End result: “Hey Siri, arm the house” disarms via AJAX and triggers cameras to start recording at higher quality.
Home Assistant
For the technically inclined — Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi (or HA Green box) integrates all three apps plus your lights, locks, blinds. Single dashboard, scriptable automations. We do this build for ~$650 supplied + fitted.
How to keep the apps reliable in Brisbane
NBN outages
If your NBN drops, app push notifications stop. We always recommend a 4G failover modem (TP-Link MR600 + Optus business SIM, ~$240/year) on the NBN router’s WAN backup port. Total cost: 65¢ per day for “alarm always reaches my phone.”
Wi-Fi mesh black spots
Akuvox indoor monitors and Dahua cameras both need stable 2.4GHz Wi-Fi (5GHz isn’t supported on most security devices). Mesh networks (Eero, Deco, Orbi) often default-prioritise 5GHz and starve the security gear. Fix: name 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks separately and bind security devices to 2.4 only.
iPhone Focus Modes blocking alarms
iOS Focus / Sleep / Do Not Disturb can suppress alarm push notifications. Whitelist DMSS, AJAX, and SmartPlus in every Focus mode. We walk through this on every install handover.

Do I need to pay a monthly fee to control my Dahua CCTV from my phone?
No. The Dahua DMSS app is free, no subscription. Some installers will try to sell you a “cloud subscription” — it’s not required. P2P encrypted live view and 30-day local playback are included.
Will the apps work if my internet goes down?
Remote viewing won’t work without internet. AJAX alarm panels with 4G failover will still report alarms via cellular. CCTV continues recording to the local NVR regardless.
How many family members can use the app?
DMSS: unlimited devices per account. AJAX: 50 users per panel. SmartPlus: 4 family devices per door station included; more by request.
Can the apps be hacked?
DMSS and AJAX use end-to-end encryption with industry-standard cipher suites. The bigger risk is your phone password being weak — enable 2FA on the app account and use Face ID/Touch ID.
