Brisbane CCTV & Alarm Service, Maintenance, and Health Checks
A security system isn’t a fit-and-forget purchase. Firmware ages, hard drives degrade, lenses cloud over, batteries die, and the day one of those silently fails is the day you learn about it (always at the worst moment). Mr Secured offers three tiers of ongoing service — annual health check, scheduled maintenance plan, and ad-hoc call-out — covering CCTV, alarm, intercom, and access control across Brisbane and South-East Queensland.
No lock-in contracts. No “you must service annually or your warranty is void.” We charge for the work, not the relationship.
What can fail (and when)
| Component | Typical failure mode | Expected lifespan | Symptom you’ll notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVR hard drive | SMART errors, bad sectors, recording gaps | 3-5 years continuous use | Playback skips, “no recording” gaps in timeline |
| Camera lens | UV haze, salt corrosion (coastal), spider webs in IR ring | 4-7 years | Image looks foggy, IR night image blown out |
| PoE switch | Capacitor age, fan death, port failure | 5-8 years | Random camera offline, comes back on reboot |
| Alarm sensor batteries (Ajax) | Discharge cycle, cold exposure | 5-7 years (claimed); we see 4-5 in QLD heat | Sensor “battery low” notification, false trigger risk |
| Backup battery (alarm panel) | Capacity loss, leakage | 3-4 years | Alarm fault on mains power-out |
| Intercom screen burn-in | Static UI elements, sun exposure | 6-10 years | Ghosted image on display |
| Modem/router (alarm path) | NBN switch, ISP firmware, port forwarding broken | Often resets on every ISP change | App offline, no remote arm/disarm |
Tier 1: Annual Health Check ($240 + GST)
The minimum every Brisbane CCTV/alarm owner should be doing. 90-minute on-site visit, once per year. Covers:
- NVR drive SMART check + free space confirmation
- Recording continuity audit (last 90 days, every camera)
- Camera image quality review on every channel — focus, exposure, IR night image, view angle
- Physical cable check at NVR + PoE switch + each accessible camera
- Alarm panel battery test + sensor battery levels
- Firmware update check across NVR, cameras, alarm panel, intercom (we patch on-site if updates are safe)
- App configuration check — push notifications working, family devices still paired
- Written report: what’s healthy, what’s degrading, what’s recommended
Most of our customers schedule this for January (when families are home and there’s time for the technician). We send a reminder.
Tier 2: Scheduled Maintenance Plan ($580 + GST/year)
For commercial sites, body corporate buildings, and homeowners who want set-and-forget. Includes:
- Two on-site visits per year (Jan + July)
- Tier 1 Annual Health Check work
- Lens cleaning + dehazing on every camera
- Battery replacement included (up to 4 batteries per visit; additional billed at cost)
- Firmware updates with rollback insurance — if a firmware update breaks anything, we restore at no charge
- Remote support priority — issues triaged within 4 business hours instead of 2 days
- System spec audit annually (e.g., is your 4-year-old 2MP system still fit for purpose?)
Tier 3: Ad-hoc Call-out
System down, alarm not arming, camera offline, can’t access app. Standard rates:
- Brisbane metro: $190 call-out + $120/hr labour. Most issues resolved in 1-2 hours.
- Remote support (via Akuvox SmartPlus, Dahua DMSS, AJAX cloud): $90 flat for issues we can resolve without a site visit. ~40% of issues fall into this bucket.
- After-hours (evenings, weekends): Standard rates +50% loading.
What you should DIY between service visits
The cost-effective in-between maintenance:
- Monthly: Check app push notifications are still arriving. Easy test: walk past a camera’s motion zone and confirm notification fires within 10 seconds.
- Quarterly: Visually inspect each camera lens. Spider webs and dirt mean blown-out night images. Wipe with a soft microfiber + isopropyl alcohol (no abrasive cloths).
- Quarterly: Test alarm system — arm, wait 60s, walk into a motion zone, confirm siren and notification. Catches dead batteries and broken sensors.
- Whenever you change ISP/modem: Check app remote access still works. ~30% of “system broken” tickets are actually modem changes.
Why scheduled maintenance pays for itself
Real customer scenarios from the last 12 months:
- $850 saved — caught a failing NVR drive at annual health check; swapped under hardware warranty (still within 24 months). Customer would have lost 30+ days of footage if the drive failed catastrophically.
- $2,400 saved — identified a 4-year-old 2MP system as inadequate for the customer’s needs (couldn’t capture car number plates). Phased upgrade quoted; customer split capex over 2 financial years rather than emergency-replacing at single year cost.
- Insurance discount preserved — RACQ requires “current installation certificate” for the 10% security discount. Annual service visit refreshes that certificate; customers without service plans lose the discount silently.
FAQ
Do I have to use the original installer for service?
No. We service systems we didn’t install. We charge a one-off $190 site assessment to document the existing system before becoming the ongoing service provider. After that, standard rates apply.
Will not servicing void my warranty?
Manufacturer hardware warranties (Dahua, Hanwha, AJAX) don’t require annual service. Mr Secured workmanship warranty (12 months) is unaffected by service status. Some commercial-grade products (e.g., Inception, Gallagher access control) recommend annual service to maintain full feature support — read the manual or ask us.
How long does an annual health check take?
Most residential systems: 60-90 minutes on-site. Larger commercial sites: 2-4 hours. Multi-building strata: half day.
Can I cancel a service plan?
Yes, any time. No cancellation fee. We don’t lock you in.
