The cheapest security system is the one wired before the plaster
If you are building in Corinda, the single biggest saving available to you is timing. Cable run through an open frame costs a fraction of the same cable chased into a finished wall, and it gives a far better result because nothing has to be compromised around existing linings.
Rough-in before lock-up
Camera, alarm and intercom cabling wants to go in at the same stage as the electrical rough-in. Even if you do not fit the hardware for another year, the cable being there changes what is possible and what it costs.
Decide the recorder location early
A recorder needs power, network, ventilation and somewhere it will not be flooded, cooked or heard. Deciding that at frame stage is free. Deciding it after handover usually means a compromise.
Run more than you need
Spare cable to the gate, the shed, the rear boundary and the front elevation costs very little during construction and saves an entire second job later. This is the one place we will tell you to over-specify.

One honesty note: you cannot mix camera brands on one recorder. Dahua cameras run on a Dahua recorder, Hanwha on Hanwha. On a larger block, adding cameras at the house does not extend your coverage — it just adds angles of the same area. Detection at the boundary and one or two identification-grade cameras on the approach beats six cameras clustered around the building.
Sheds and detached garages
Bigger blocks mean outbuildings, and outbuildings hold tools, bikes and equipment worth more than most people insure them for. A wireless door contact and an outdoor detector on a shed is inexpensive and consistently worth it.
Rear boundaries onto corridors
Properties backing onto the rail corridor or a service laneway have a quiet, unlit rear approach. That boundary usually deserves detection rather than another camera watching the driveway.
Commuter parking is normal here
Unfamiliar cars parked all day near the station are routine, so they tell you nothing. Plate capture at your own driveway line is what actually helps if something happens.

We are building. When should the security cabling go in?
At electrical rough-in, before the plasterboard. Cable run through an open frame is far cheaper and gives a better result than chasing it into finished walls later. You do not have to buy the cameras then — just get the cable in.
My block is large. Do I just need more cameras?

Will outdoor detectors go off constantly?
Not with the right hardware. Ajax outdoor detectors use dual technology and adjustable zones specifically so pets, possums and moving vegetation do not trigger them. Cheap outdoor PIRs are why people assume outdoor detection cannot work.
How long does a CCTV installation take?
A typical Corinda home with five or six cameras plus an alarm is one day. A large block with perimeter detection, a gate intercom or outbuildings can extend into a second day. We tell you which at the quote, not on the morning.
