When your back fence is public land
A lot of Sherwood homes back onto the arboretum, the riverside reserve or a drainage corridor. It is one of the best things about living here and it is also the single most overlooked security exposure we see in the suburb.
The rear is the approach, not the front
A property backing onto reserve can be approached on foot, at night, with no vehicle, no neighbours and no street lighting. Most systems in these streets are heavily weighted to the front door. The camera and detection budget usually needs to shift rearward.
Detect at the fence, not at the back door
By the time someone is at the back door they are already behind your screening. Outdoor detection — a DualCurtain along the fence line or a MotionCam Outdoor covering the rear yard — gives you the warning while there is still time to do something with it.
Vegetation cuts both ways
Mature planting on a reserve boundary gives privacy and gives cover. We position cameras so the screening does not also screen the approach, and use dual-technology detection so wind through the canopy does not trigger the alarm.
Point it at your land
Cameras covering a rear boundary must be aimed and masked so they cover your yard and fence line, not the public path beyond it. That is both good manners and good practice.

One honesty note: you cannot mix camera brands on one recorder. Dahua cameras run on a Dahua recorder, Hanwha on Hanwha. The single exception is Dahua TiOC cameras on an Ajax recorder, because the deterrence is built into the camera itself. Shopfronts, and the cars parked all day
Retail needs identification, not atmosphere
A shopfront camera that shows someone was in the store is useless. The camera that matters is the one at head height covering the entry, set for identification, plus one covering the register or till area. We would rather fit three cameras that do a job than eight that fill a screen.
After hours is the real risk window
Most small-business losses along a strip like this happen when the shop is closed. Active deterrence and a monitored alarm matter more than resolution once the lights are off.
Commuter parking spills into the streets
All-day parking around a station means unfamiliar vehicles in residential streets as a matter of routine, which makes an unfamiliar car a useless signal. Plate capture at your own driveway line is the thing that actually helps afterwards.
Mixed-use walls
Older strip buildings often have a residence or storeroom sharing a wall. We check what is on the other side before drilling, and design detection so a shared wall is covered rather than assumed.

- Outdoor detection: from around $660 per DualCurtain, or $825 per MotionCam Outdoor. On a reserve-backing property this is usually the best value line on the whole quote.
The two-storey note: if cameras cannot be run through the main roof space, reaching a lower roof adds conduit and time — typically around $500. We tell you on site whether that applies rather than surprising you on the invoice. UPS battery backup is available on request but is not included as standard.

My yard backs onto the parkland. What should I prioritise?
Detection at the fence line before more cameras at the house. A DualCurtain or MotionCam Outdoor covering the rear boundary gives you warning while someone is still outside, which is the whole point. Then one good identification-grade camera covering the rear approach.
Can a camera cover the reserve behind my fence?
We aim and mask cameras to cover your property and fence line rather than the public land beyond. That keeps the footage useful and avoids the privacy problems that come with pointing a camera at a public path.
Do you do shopfronts as well as houses?
Yes. Small retail and service premises along Sherwood Road are a regular part of what we do — identification-grade entry coverage, till coverage, after-hours deterrence, and fob or code access for staff instead of keys.
Can I mix camera brands?
No, and be wary of anyone who says otherwise. Cameras must match the recorder brand. The only exception we offer is Dahua TiOC cameras on an Ajax recorder, because the active deterrence is built into the camera itself.
Will possums and wind set off outdoor detection?
Not with the right hardware and setup. Outdoor Ajax detectors use dual technology and adjustable zones specifically so small animals and moving vegetation do not trigger them. Cheap outdoor PIRs are the reason people think outdoor detection does not work.
How long does a CCTV installation take?
A typical Sherwood home with five or six cameras plus an alarm is one day. Adding perimeter detection along a long rear boundary, a gate intercom or a two-level cable run can extend into a second day. We tell you which at the quote, not on the morning.
