There’s a moment in most break-ins where the outcome could still go either way. The burglar has approached the property, assessed the risk, and decided to proceed — but they haven’t committed yet. They’re at the side gate, or at the fence line, or moving through the yard toward a rear door. At that moment, a loud alarm at the perimeter changes everything. By the time they’re inside, that moment has already passed.
This is the core argument for perimeter alarm systems, and it’s why we fit them on a significant proportion of our installs — particularly for properties that have experienced a near-miss, or for clients in suburbs with higher recorded break-in rates.
Why Cameras Alone Don’t Stop a Break-In
Cameras are documentation tools. An excellent camera system with 4K resolution, AI motion detection, and 60 days of stored footage will give police everything they need to identify an offender — after the break-in has already occurred. If someone has decided your property is worth the risk, the presence of cameras alone rarely stops them. Most experienced burglars know cameras are there and have already decided the footage won’t matter.
An active perimeter alarm is something different entirely. When a motion detector at your rear fence triggers a siren at 95 decibels, the situation changes immediately. That noise attracts attention from neighbours, passers-by, and potentially nearby police. More importantly, it removes the one thing an intruder needs to complete a break-in: time without attention.
How Perimeter Detection Works in Practice
A perimeter alarm system uses outdoor motion detectors — typically passive infrared (PIR) or dual-technology PIR/microwave sensors — positioned to cover fence lines, side access paths, and entry points before they reach the building itself. When triggered, these sensors communicate with a central hub that activates sirens, sends phone notifications, and — if the system is monitored — alerts a response centre.
The Ajax outdoor motion detectors we use are designed specifically for Queensland conditions. They handle humidity, heat, and insects better than most alternatives on the market, and they use encrypted wireless communication to the hub rather than legacy radio frequencies that can be disrupted. False alarm rates are managed through dual-technology detection and configurable sensitivity zones — the system distinguishes between a person moving deliberately through the yard and a possum crossing the fence line.
Perimeter Alarms for Brisbane’s Most Common Property Types
On a standard Brisbane residential block, perimeter coverage typically means sensors covering the side gate, rear fence line, and any secondary access to the backyard. For homes on larger blocks or acreage properties, we extend coverage with additional sensors and sometimes beam-based detection for longer boundary runs. The exact layout depends on where the genuine access risks are — not just where it’s easy to mount a sensor.
For commercial properties, perimeter alarm coverage is often critical to the insurance claim process. Many commercial insurers now require evidence of monitored perimeter detection for full theft cover on properties above a certain value threshold. We work with businesses across Brisbane, Logan, and the Sunshine Coast to design and install systems that meet their insurer’s specific requirements.
Integration with Cameras and Interior Alarm
Perimeter alarms work best as part of a coordinated system. When a perimeter sensor triggers, your NVR can be configured to begin recording at elevated priority. Exterior lights can activate automatically. Interior sensors can switch to a heightened alert state. On the Ajax platform, all of these responses can be automated through the Ajax app without requiring a separate “smart home” hub or integration layer.
This kind of coordinated response is what separates a proper security system from a collection of individual devices. Each component does more because it knows what the others are doing.
Find Out Whether Your Property Has a Perimeter Gap
Jarrod assesses properties across Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and the Sunshine Coast at no charge. He’ll identify whether your current setup has perimeter gaps and give you an honest opinion on whether a perimeter system would make a meaningful difference for your specific property — some properties genuinely don’t need one.
