The front door is where most people have their security weakest. They’ve got cameras covering the driveway and the backyard, but when someone knocks, the default response is still to walk to the door and open it — without knowing who’s there, whether anyone else came with them, or whether the person at the door is who they say they are.
A video intercom system changes this interaction completely. You see and speak to whoever is at the door from inside the house, from your phone while you’re at work, or from anywhere with an internet connection. You let in the people you want to let in. You don’t open the door to anyone you don’t.
What a Properly Installed Video Intercom Does
The outdoor unit — mounted at the gate, front door, or both — has a camera, a microphone, a speaker, and a call button. When someone presses the button, it rings on your indoor monitor and/or your phone app simultaneously. You see a live video feed of the caller, speak to them through two-way audio, and release the door strike or gate latch from the panel or your phone if you want to let them in.
Everything is logged. Visitor photos, call timestamps, access events — all stored and searchable. If a courier drops a package and you were in a meeting, you can review exactly what happened at your door while you were unavailable. If someone approaches the door without pressing the call button, the camera records that too.
Integration with Your Gate, Alarm, and Cameras
The real value comes when the intercom is integrated with the rest of your security system. A properly integrated setup means your gate can be released from the intercom panel or your phone, your camera NVR captures a clip linked to each door release event, and your alarm system knows whether the front door has been opened by an authorised entry or triggered a sensor without a prior intercom interaction.
For Brisbane homes with electric gates, this integration is particularly useful. You can release the gate remotely for a tradesperson while you’re at work, get an alert when they leave, and have the gate close automatically — all from the same app, with footage of the entire visit stored on your NVR.
Multi-Residence and Apartment Applications
Video intercom systems scale well for units and townhouse complexes. A single outdoor panel with a directory handles multiple units, each with their own indoor monitor or app connection. Visitors call a specific apartment, that apartment’s resident sees the visitor and releases the door — other residents aren’t disturbed and don’t have to interact with the system at all.
For body corporates considering an upgrade, modern intercom systems also provide a more defensible audit trail than traditional key-based lobby access. If there’s ever an access dispute or an incident in common areas, there’s a logged record of who entered when.
What to Look for in a Video Intercom System
The outdoor unit needs to handle Queensland conditions — heat, humidity, and direct sun exposure are hard on electronics that aren’t rated for it. We specify units with IP65 or better weatherproofing ratings and vandal-resistant housing. Camera quality matters at the door even more than it does elsewhere — the whole point is identification, so wide dynamic range (to handle backlit conditions where the sun is behind the visitor) and a wide enough field of view to capture more than just the person’s chest are both important.
App functionality varies significantly between brands. Some systems have reliable, responsive apps with good notification delivery. Others are unreliable enough to defeat the purpose. We only install systems we’d use ourselves.
